  1. While the "The Tea Party in Action" means well by putting out this survey to candidates, and I applaud them for that. I would have a problem with anyone who would sign it based on the "Bailout of US Sugar" issue. The whole story is not being told, and I do not fault them, because it is not well known what the true story is.

The reality is this is much more about the Citizens of Florida having fresh water than the bailout of US Sugar.

You see, the fresh water we have in Southeast Florida comes from Lake Okeechobee and filters through the Everglades down to underground natural aquifers. The canals they cut into the Everglades years ago did tremendous damage by allowing the fresh water to flow too fast and thus not filling the aquifers. Currently, they are backing up with salt water.

There is only one place left in the Everglade for Florida to build a water treatment facility, and it is the land US Sugar owns and they know it. That is why US Sugar has been literally dictating the price and terms from the beginning.

A couple of weeks ago I spoke with the Southern Water Management District (SFMD) and they assured me there would be at lease two public hearing before this was decided upon.

I am disgusted with US Sugar's strong arm tactic of putting a "take it or leave it" deal on the table to force the SFWD to decide in 24 hours.

I believe they did this so the Public would not have a say in it. They knew that the People would not pay double the price for the canker tree ridden swamp land. I am sure they did this because they knew the deal was going to change if the public was allowed input.

We paid way to much for the land because it was based on questionable appraisals done during the peak of the housing market and US Sugar showed they do not care about their customers or the people of Florida.

I would not want to be on the SFWD Board that was faced with that decision, but they knew they had to take it. They know we must have that land for Southeast Florida to exist. We would not last long without fresh water.

My feeling is our efforts are best spent on boycotting all products produced by US Sugar and protest the price and terms, but not the deal itself.

  2. Any candidate that signs this does not understand the issue.

The supposed bailout of US Sugar is not the primary reason for Florida to buy the land at the upper edge of the everglades from US Sugar. The whole story is not being told, because it is not well known what the true story is.
